Joseph came to Canada with his parents at the age of about 14. He spent the rest of his long life in Albion Twp., his home being on Lot 19, Con. 7 (Castlederg). For many years he was a Trustee of the Methodist Church called Shiloh, which he reached by crossing the back of his farm. He was also Church Steward, Class Leader and Sunday School Superintendent. His obituary in the Christian Guardian of Nov. 18, 1896 says that he was “A genial and kind-hearted Christian man, his very countenance attesting the fact.” He retained his faculties until the end of his long and useful life and in his 90th year he wrote several “Books” (in his own hand in school blank-books) for some of his grandchildren. These contain not only a history of the Roadhouse Family, but also his thoughts on many subjects, sometimes in poetic form.
